REIMAGINING A CIVIC AND CULTURAL CORRIDOR
14TH STREET REDEVELOPMENTDENVER, CO
DENVER'S AMBASSADOR CORRIDOR
Within this "Ambassador" Street are found Denver's most diverse cultural and civic attractions including the Convention Center; the City's municipal building; the Performing Arts Complex; the University of Colorado at Denver; the Historic Larimer Square retail district; the City's largest hotel; and a variety of office and residential users.
studioINSITE's overarching challenge was to visually unify the diversity of public/private attractions and to physically enhance the corridor utilizing the highest design standards for the public realm. To accomplish this, studioINSITE adapated the design solution to each unique block, every individual property condition, and each utility encountered within the corridor. The revitalization of this 12-block corridor occurred over a 7-year period, integrating feedback from a diverse group of stakeholders, while keeping the corridor open for business and transit uses during construction. The resulting design artfully transformed a sterile street into a vibrant, pedestrian oriented corridor of extraordinary character and identity.
AMERICA'S FIRST GREEN ROADS CERTIFIED PROJECT
The infrastructure, materials, and water conservation efforts studioINSITE incorporated into the project established 14th Street as the first corridor in the United States to receive a "Green Roads" Certification from the Greenroads Foundation, and positioned it as one of the nation's most sustainable public streets.
