ACTIVATING THE PEDESTRIAN ENVIRONMENT OF DENVER'S MAINSTREET
COLFAX AVENUE STREETSCAPE DESIGN MASTER PLANDENVER, CO
CATALYST PROJECTS AND FUNDING GUIDE IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY
studioINSITE led a master streetscape design plan for Colfax Avenue that is intended to highlight streetscape improvements, sub-area catalyst projects, and a funding / phasing plan for implementation. The team held an intensive public outreach process including meetings with stakeholders, the BID Board, focus groups, public events, and an online survey. The streetscape plan integrates a future BRT line and RTD bus shelters, establishes a complete streets model for safe and efficient bike and pedestrian mobility, and provides pedestrian and bike infrastructure along the corridor.
GUIDING DEVELOPMENT THROUGH A PHASED STRATEGY
The master streetscape plan includes guidance documents that provide context, data, and best practices. Included within the guidelines are conceptual designs for the entirety of four identified subareas with recommendations for streetscape character and functionality, and a ‘kit of parts’ including lighting, signage / wayfinding, furnishings, landscaping, public art, and crosswalk treatments. The unique identity and character of the area is recognized through branding, gateways, and art supporting a destination place with a sense of community.
