CREATING A CAMPUS HEART
CREIGHTON UNIVERSITYOMAHA, NE
TURNING CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES
studioINSITE's original master plan identified opportunities to increase enrollment, replace infrastructure, establish gateways, and enhance the image and identity of the university. One of the early outcomes from the plan was California Street Redevelopment. This former cobblestone streetcar route was turned into a usable outdoor space within the historic core of the campus, encouraging social interaction and activating an 8-block space within the heart of the campus.
INTEGRATING THE CAMPUS INTO THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT
The 2015 Master Plan update addresses the ever-changing urban context surrounding the campus, particularly in the North Downtown neighborhood. With the goal of creating a residential focused campus that is integrated into the surrounding environment, mixed-use residential development along the Cuming Street corridor and on the east side of campus will be an important goal to meet the future housing needs of the university. The need to expand multimodal transportation opportunities is another important factor affecting the university.
